My personal journey in the development of this bone protocol began about 10 years ago. I was walking a trail for the fall equinox and paying attention to the changing foliage. I was also engaged in conversation with Dr. Pai and walking at a brisk pace around a curve in the trail, when a rock stopped me in my tracks and sent me flying. I outstretched my arm to protect my face and head as I fell to the ground. My hand slid across a large sharp rock and cut my hand next to the little finger. I wrapped it in my t-shirt to try to stop the bleeding. It was very painful. I was pretty sure that I needed stitches and maybe an x-ray. It was a long way back down the hill and into the urgent care. I needed some stitches and was given a half cast to stabilize a break in the metacarpal of the little finger which I was shown on the digital x-ray and was told to come back in two weeks to give some time for the swelling to reduce before I could be provided with a full cast.
Immediately after my visit to urgent care, I went into our Sanjevani Store and picked out some supplements to assist my healing. Bosmeric-SR for the pain, Guna Osteobios (now called Guna Osteo), Sanjevani Bone Formula Plus Ipraflavone and Regenisil for bone and wound healing. I doubled up on everything to ensure my healing success. Two weeks later, I returned to the Urgent Care. They took another digital x-ray to prepare me for a cast up to my elbow. I waited patiently for the Urgent Care MD to return. As he approached me to show me the results of the new x-ray on the screen, he had a bewildered look on his face. I asked what was wrong. He told me that he was looking for a healing response in the metacarpal but couldn’t find one. Now I had the bewildered look on my face. How could that be? He told me that he couldn’t find a healing response (even viewing the area that was previously broken from different angles) because it was COMPLETELY HEALED! And then added that I should continue doing what I had been doing, I would not be needing a cast. What a relief! I’m a massage therapist and 6 weeks in a cast and then physiotherapy after that meant I would be out of commission for 2 months.
Since then, I have been telling our customers and patients about my wonderful healing experience using the Bone Support Protocol products. It has helped so many people and they have returned to tell me what their doctors have said about how fast they were able to knit broken bones. Most were astonished.
In December of 2015 I was diagnosed with anal cancer. After undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments for 6 weeks, I was declared cancer free and remain so today. But as we all know, those treatments leave lasting side effects. The gift that keeps on giving, they say. But I’m a determined woman. Give me a challenge and I will take it on. For me, the lasting side effects have been osteoporosis and hypothyroidism (Hashimoto’s) from the chemotherapy. I never had either one of these issues prior to chemotherapy and radiation. In fact, the oncologist told me that my normal bone density would turn into osteoporosis after the first week of chemotherapy.
Healthy bone to stage 4 Osteoporosis
My Oncologist was eager for me to start on Prolia right away. His words came with a stern warning about falling and statistics. First, I reminded him that I am a yoga teacher and have been doing yoga since I was 12 years old. One of the primary things that yoga teaches us is balance, strength, and flexibility. In yoga classes I teach how to walk on the earth consciously with full awareness of proprioception. We learn how to support the weight of our entire body effortlessly. I told him that I did not like the side effects of any of the drugs used for Osteoporosis and I proposed a challenge to him. If he would give me one year, I would try my way first with the supplements. If there was continued deterioration of the bones or no change at all, I would reconsider my position.
I was faithful to my protocol and after a year retested with the Dexa scan. Surprise, surprise! Even I was surprised at the results. My oncologist didn’t say much, just that we would retest again and continue to follow up. Here are the results from my testing. Updated for 2021 results.

Since then, I have been using some new products that I believe are excellent additions to the original protocol. Gandha Tailam and Rehmannia Six Formula. Gandha Tailam is an Ayurvedic formula used for the treatment of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. It increases calcium absorption in the bones thus improving bone strength and bone mass. It helps to heal bone fractures and breaks quickly. It is also used to increase strength in joints and ligaments. Balances Vata Dosha.
Rehmannia Six is a traditional Chinese Medicine herb. In 2019, a study conducted in China with a group of 72 patients with primary osteoporosis (Wan JM, et al. China J Ortho Traum. 2019. 25; 32(6): 535-538. The patients in the experimental group, who averaged about 64 years old, took the Rehmannia Six Formula twice weekly (one morning dose and one evening dose on each treatment day). The other group taking alendronate (Fosamax) were of similar age and followed the standard alendronate (Fosamax) regimen of 70mg orally once a week. Patients in both groups also took 600mg of calcium carbonate D3 and 0.5 µg of calcitriol per day throughout the study.
The difference in Bone Mass Density between the two groups following the treatment was not statistically significant, suggesting similar rates of improvement with both treatment types. Please note that the Rehmannia Six Formula was only used twice weekly and best of all no side effects were reported in the herbal formula unlike the common side effects with alendronate (Fosamax).
Currently, there is a lot of controversy about calcium and the “best” forms of calcium for easy absorption, Sanjevani’s Bone Formula Plus Ipraflavone contains:
Calcium citrate-malate, significantly more absorbable compared to other forms of calcium, such as calcium carbonate. About 40% more calcium is absorbed from calcium citrate-malate compared to calcium carbonate or milk. It is also well-tolerated and does not produce intestinal discomfort, constipation, or gas like some other forms of calcium.
And Ipriflavone, a derivative of naturally occurring isoflavones found in soy. Numerous published clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of this flavonoid-like compound in supporting healthy bone mineral density and metabolism. Sanjevani Bone Formula Plus Ipriflavone provides 300 mg of Ipriflavone in each serving, the same amount used in clinical studies.
Magnesium and boron are also necessary for healthy bones. Magnesium supports bone strength and remodeling, while boron promotes calcium and magnesium balance.
In addition, we recommend the following:
Vitamin D3 is essential for calcium absorption and supporting healthy bone mineral density.
Vitamin K1 and K2 activates proteins used in bone metabolism. The combined actions of these nutrients create a more comprehensive approach to maintaining bone health. Several different forms of vitamin K exist, with the primary dietary form being vitamin K1, or phylloquinone, found primarily in green vegetables. Another form of vitamin K known as vitamin K2, or menaquinone, which has a longer half-life and more targeted benefits for bone metabolism.
It is recommended to take two tablets twice daily with food. I take my second dose at night before I sleep, and it helps me to sleep soundly.
Guna Osteo is the next generation of homeopathy. Guna low dose medicines are unique, due to the ingredients, the specific dilutions and the special manufacturing process. Sanjevani RegeneSil provides ch-OSA (choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid), that helps naturally nourish your body’s beauty proteins. Regular orthosilicic acid is highly unstable, leading it to form polymers. These polymers are too large for the human body to absorb. But the patented choline stabilization technology in Sanjevani RegeneSil prevents the polymers from forming, ensuring optimal absorption. Sanjevani RegeneSil has been formulated with clinically proven ch-OSA for your assurance.
Sanjevani RegeneSil provides in a 6 drop serving – 120 mg of Choline as ch-OSA® (choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid) and 5 mg of Silica as ch-OSA® (choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid). Higher potency than most other forms of silica drops.
For years, orthosilicic acid was the focus of intense research because it was viewed as a potential collagen generator. As a result of that research, the molecular complex known as choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid (ch-OSA®) was created. Choline not only has the positively charged nitrogen atom that forms the vital bond with OSA, but according to leading collagen researchers, choline transports the orthosilicic acid into target cells where it activates the pathways involved in collagen production. Clinical trials also suggest that beyond its ability to generate collagen, ch-OSA promotes keratin and elastin formation—two proteins that assist in skin elasticity and hair tensile strength.*[5-7]
Collagen is the body’s main structural protein. Collagen makes up 70% of skin and gives skin both strength and elasticity. Collagen forms 30% of bone and gives bones the flexibility they need to withstand impact. The collagen fibers in bone are the binding sites for calcium as well as all bone minerals.[1] Collagen is the major component of fascia, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. But, did you know that collagen production begins decreasing at age 18? By the age of 40, the decrease is about 1% per year.[2] For women, the decline equates to a loss of 7% of skin thickness every 10 years. Following menopause, the decline in thickness accelerates to as much as 1.13% annually, while skin elasticity degrades 0.55% per year.[3] Adequate collagen production correlates with healthy bones and strong hair and nails.*[2-4]
In a 20-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 50 women with photo-damaged facial skin, oral intake of two ch- OSA capsules resulted in significantly improved skin, visco-elasticity properties, and a 30% reduction in micro-wrinkle depth compared to placebo.[5] In the same clinical trial, the women’s hair and nails showed significant improvements in strength. In a nine-month, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 48 healthy Caucasian women with fine hair (average age 43.3 years), ch-OSA (in daily capsules) significantly improved hair thickness and hair tensile strength.[6] In a 12-month clinical trial conducted at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London, women already taking 1000 mg of calcium and 800 IU of vitamin D to which they added ch-OSA saw thigh bone mineral density at the hip increase by 2.00% over the placebo as a result of an increase in actual bone formation, not just a decrease in loss.[7] The procollagen marker P1NP (procollagen type-1 N-terminal propeptide) increased significantly after 12 months in women who took ch-OSA compared to women in the placebo group. P1NP is known as the most sensitive marker for bone collagen formation and an early marker of bone formation.[7] Animal studies support the human clinical findings for ch-OSA with respect to collagen formation and bone mineral density.*[8-10]
Let’s further discuss the role that collagen plays in maintaining healthy skin, hair, nails, ligaments, tendons, bones, and blood vessels. After all, with this kind of change that can occur throughout life, it is important for us all to know how we can best maintain and produce collagen.
Collagen is found in skin, bone, hair, nails and connective tissue
Collagen based tissues such as skin, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bones are continually being remodeled throughout a person’s life. During the rebuilding phase, specialized cells called fibroblasts build new collagen. Fibroblast cells in the bone are called osteoblasts, in the tendons they are called tenocytes and in the cartilage they are called chondrocytes. It is estimated that a person needs to make approximately 100 grams of new collagen a day to remodel the skeleton, skin, muscle, cartilage, heart, lungs and ligaments to keep them strong and healthy. Did you know that the human skeleton is completely renewed in 7-10 years?
Collagen makes up about 75% of the dry weight of skin. It is the substance that gives skin its strength and thickness. It is also the structure which reflects light from the skin to give it that healthy glow. Healthy bones are about 30% collagen. The other 70% is made up of calcium phosphate and other minerals. Collagen fibers make up the underlying framework of the bones called osteoid which gives bone its flexibility and ability to absorb impact. Collagen fibers also make up the binding sites for calcium phosphate crystals deposit. The more bone collagen fibers one has, the higher the bone mineral density. The quantity and quality of the bone collagen makes up about 80% of the bone’s strength.
What about taking collagen protein powders or supplements? Unfortunately, taking collagen protein powders or supplements as well as eating collagen rich foods is NOT going to increase the collagen in the body. Why? Because, when collagen is eaten, the body digests it just like any other protein and breaks it down into amino acids and other protein metabolites like glycine and proline. Eating collagen does NOT activate the critical enzymes required to build mature collagen out of the amino acids. It is silicon that is required to activate the enzymes to build the amino acids to form the proteins that make up the framework of skin and bone, including hair, nails, and blood vessels. Yes, even blood vessels are collagen dependent tissues. Amazing fact: the human body contains about 60 million miles of blood vessels and they are made up of 40% collagen and elastin.
In the 60’s and 70’s, some orthomolecular doctors noticed a correlation between the health of skin and arteries. These doctors could look at person’s earlobe and determine the health of their blood vessels. Dr. Sanders Frank wrote about this correlation in the New England Journal of Medicine. He found that if the earlobe had a diagonal crease, it was a sign of collagen metabolism problems which could affect other parts of the body that were collagen dependent. A diagonal crease in the earlobe could be an indicator of coronary artery disease. Another study done in Europe correlated deep forehead wrinkles with detrimental cardiovascular implications.
Here’s something else to think about: We also know that the immune system affects bone health. But how is that possible? I would like to address this question in a future blog in which I will be talking about bone health from an Ayurvedic perspective.
Exercise and Yoga:
diet and supplementation, exercise is vital to creating and maintaining bone integrity and flexibility. Just 15-20 minutes a day walking (in sunshine) can activate the processes in the body that helps to maintain health and vitality on so many levels, including physical and emotional health.
We highly recommend yoga for a healthy body and mind. There is so much research now about how yoga can be beneficial for aging bones that I would like to present this subject in a separate blog about yoga and osteopenia and osteoporosis.
Watch this blog space.
