Welcome Intro Ayurveda Part 1

Welcome to Maureen’s Health Blog!

Since many of us are staying home with family members or working at home, part of the time or all of the time due to COVID-19, I thought a blog would be a good way for me to reach out and share some vital information about health and healing.  You might be getting a lot of advice online from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or “Doctor” Google. Those sources are great for a quick search but there is a lot of fact checking required and none of those sources take into consideration that you are an individual with a complex series of things going on in your body, mind or soul. One size never fits all when it comes to, well just about anything. And this is exactly how we get into trouble following the advice of online sources. I am not saying that they are all giving you bad advice.  I’m just saying that the advice is better when someone knows a little more about you. As many of you reading this blog are either a patient, client or customer, you have come to trust advice from me or Dr. Pai. If you are not a patient, client or customer, then follow along and I hope we can offer you some interesting and hopefully new information.  Whatever way you got here, thank you for joining.

Who is Maureen Sutton?

I wear a lot of hats at House of Sanjevani. I am a doctor of Ayurvedic Medicine, Yoga Teacher, Massage Therapist with lots of different therapeutic tools in my tool belt and also a Plant Based Nutrition Councilor. Oh, and I’m a cancer survivor/THRIVER! too so I have my own unique perspectives about cancer and its support. My hobbies include traveling, learning everything I can about herbs (Western and Ayurvedic herbs particularly) and plant-based cooking. You can read my bio on the website sanjevani.net. Hopefully, I will bring a variety of things to this blog that will interest you. Please forgive my rambling.  This is my very first blog and I wanted to introduce myself briefly and establish why I’m writing this blog.

What does an Ayurvedic Consultation Look Like?

A lot of people wonder what a doctor of Ayurvedic Medicine does in a consultation. So, this is how I conduct an Ayurvedic consultation. In the first consultation session, I would take your complete health history which would establish why you made the appointment in the first place and probably much more.  I would take your vitals like your temperature and blood pressure and then continue taking Ayurveda’s vital signs like your pulse, look at your nails, your hair, your eyes and your tongue.  I would also palpate your abdomen for information about your visceral organs. I would ask you about your diet and lifestyle and significant events in your health history and what led up to them. I would also ask you if you had any particular health goals you wish to achieve. Using the principles of Ayurveda, we would begin to construct solutions to improve your health and lifestyle based on our findings and the particular season and our geographic location.  Ayurveda takes all things into account. An Ayurvedic doctor finds out your particular body, mind, emotional type like Vata, Pitta or Kapha and what combination of these you were born with and where you are now due to your age, location, the season, your social interactions, etc. The solutions could include dietary changes, lifestyle changes, herbs, exercise, particular massages or Ayurvedic treatments, breath work, meditation, music, color schemes and much more. None of these have side effects, just side benefits! And we would work together through the necessary number of sessions until you achieve your goals. Ayurveda is the knowledge of life (its definition). The guidance of Ayurveda can be used for an entire lifetime, from birth to death. It is gentle, loving and kind. It is never harsh or scary. In the next blog, I will introduce you to some of the treatments Ayurveda uses for health and healing. Ayurvedic massages and treatments can be used for simply relaxation as well as healing specific health conditions.

I hope you will send me your questions. But, please be advised that I cannot treat or diagnose your health conditions on this blog, so don’t send me personal information about your health condition or someone else’s. Instead, please call our office on:(505) 821-6300 press 1 to make an appointment.
